Impacts of Culture | STUDY ABROAD SPAIN
While studying in Madrid, Spain I found myself really struggling with culture shock. I also don't speak or understand Spanish, so getting used to everything was incredibly difficult. I tried to use this struggle as a challenge to learn more about cultural communication. These are some Ted Talks I came across that really helped me understand why It is so important to be aware of and understand the way we communicate and what impacts it.
1. Cross Cultural Communication | Pellegrino Riccardi
"Pellegrino, being a cross-cultural expert, he is sharing with us his personal and professional experience about how do very different cultures can successfully coexist next to each other. Is it difficult to live in Norway, being an expat? Do you know how to establish the mutual understanding between Italian and Norwegian?"
2. How Culture Drives Behaviours | Julien S. Bourrelle
"Julien argues how we see the World through cultural glasses. By changing the glasses you can change the way you interpret the World."
3. Culture and Leadership | Joseph Trimble
"In a changing society, new leadership styles are emerging. This talk calls out the old dominating styles and brings to light more inclusive, diverse and effective options."
4. Cultural Difference in Business | Valerie Hoeks
One of the elements of the cultural difference between Europe and China is the importance that is given to relationships. In the West, you would assume the importance to be the same, but there is a significant distinction. In China connections with the right people help you to get things done, to survive and to succeed.
5. How Cross-Cultural Understanding Can Help us to See Each Other | Simone Buijzen
Originally from Sittard and fascinated by the psychology of people and their different backgrounds, Simone has travelled the globe for over 25 years. Starting out as a marketer for multi-national companies she has witnessed a lot of cross-cultural misunderstandings that though hilarious were often time and money consuming. Her love of people and her extensive international business experience inspired her to study cross-cultural communication and start building bridges between different cultures.
